Rolling Jack Trolley for a Vehicle Service Pit

Project Overview

A rolling utility jack stand built to work over a vehicle service pit. It spans the pit opening and rolls along the pit’s own edge rails, so it can be positioned anywhere along the length of the vehicle rather than being lifted in and out or worked around.

The deck is made up in sections — perforated plate through the centre, formed channel trays either side, and checker plate at the two end platforms — so the surfaces that get stood on, the surfaces that hold tools, and the surfaces that need to drain are all doing their own job instead of one flat plate doing all three badly.

What We Built

• A welded steel frame sized to span the pit opening and roll on its existing edge rails
• Rollers running on polished round guide bars set along both sides
• Checker plate end platforms with raised lips
• A perforated plate deck section, so oil and washings fall through rather than pooling
• Formed channel trays for tools and drained components
• Tubular grab handles at both ends for pushing the unit along the pit

Why It Was Built This Way

Shop equipment gets judged differently from architectural work. Nobody photographs it, but somebody uses it every day, and the details that matter are the ones that stop being noticed: whether the handles are where your hands already are, whether the trolley rolls with one push or needs shoving, whether oil drains or sits.

The perforated centre section is the clearest example. A solid deck would have been faster to make and would have collected everything spilled on it. Punching it out means the mess goes into the pit, where it was going anyway, instead of onto the thing you have to lean over.
