West Vancouver is the hardest environment we build gates for, and the most rewarding. Steep lots, long private driveways, exposed ocean frontage and houses where the entrance is part of the architecture. Salt air changes the specification
This is the single biggest difference between a West Vancouver gate and one a few kilometres inland. Properties on or near the water take salt-laden air continuously, and salt finds every place a coating is thin, every unsealed cavity and every dissimilar-metal contact.
That pushes three decisions. Material — aluminum and stainless earn their cost here in a way they do not everywhere. Sealing — hollow sections are sealed or drained so salt water cannot sit inside them. And fixings — matching hardware to the frame material so you do not set up a galvanic couple that eats the gate from the fastener outward.
Where steel is still the right answer for strength or budget, hot-dip galvanizing before finishing is worth the extra step in this exposure.
Steep and long driveways
Much of West Vancouver sits on the slope, and driveways here are often both steep and long. A gate at the road on a rising drive cannot simply swing inward — it will ground out. Sliding and cantilever gates solve it, and on a long drive automation stops being a luxury and becomes the reason for the gate.
Long approaches also raise sightlines: where the gate sits relative to the road, and whether a vehicle can wait clear of traffic while it opens. That is worth resolving at the measure, not after.
Gates that match the house
A lot of West Vancouver work is design-led, either from an architect’s drawing or developed with the homeowner. We build forged gates with hand-worked detail, clean modern slat and plate gates, and mixed pieces combining steel with timber or cast elements. On the view side, gates are often kept deliberately open in pattern so the entry does not wall off the outlook — the same logic behind the view railings we build here.
Posts, retaining walls and rock
Hillside lots mean retaining walls, engineered fill and sometimes rock. What the gate post goes into matters more than the gate itself, because the post takes the working load every day. Fixing to the top of a retaining wall is not the same as setting into undisturbed ground, and where the answer depends on that wall’s own design we say so rather than assume.
Automation
Plan it before the gate is built. The operator changes hinge loading, bracing and conduit routing, and on a long or steep drive it also affects how the gate is supported through its travel. We build the metalwork to suit the operator and coordinate with your automation and electrical trades; the operator is supplied and commissioned by the automation specialist.
Permits, bylaws and approvals
Height, setback and permit requirements depend on the property, the zoning and the scope of work, and in West Vancouver they come from the District of West Vancouver as the authority having jurisdiction. Some properties also sit under additional design guidelines. We raise it early and recommend confirming with the District, or a professional review, before fabrication.
