Coquitlam driveways are harder than most. The newer hillside subdivisions come with steep approaches, long openings and retaining walls, and a gate that would be straightforward on a flat lot needs rethinking here. We fabricate driveway gates in our North Vancouver shop and install them across Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody.
Steep driveways
On Burke Mountain, Westwood Plateau and the streets climbing away from the valley floor, the driveway often rises sharply from the road. That is the single biggest constraint on the gate.
A conventional swing gate on a rising drive jams against the surface partway through its arc. There are three usual answers, and the right one depends on the actual grade at your opening: raise the bottom rail and accept a larger ground gap, hang the leaf on rising-butt hinges so it lifts as it opens, or slide the gate across the opening instead of swinging it. Sliding and cantilever gates solve the problem outright, which is why so many of the steeper Tri-Cities driveways end up with them.
None of that can be decided from a photo. We measure the slope on site before quoting.
Long spans
Newer Coquitlam builds often have wide double driveways, and a wide opening is a structural problem before it is a design one. The wider the leaf, the more it wants to sag under its own weight, and the more load lands on the hinge post.
Wide openings get handled by splitting into a double gate, using a cantilever slide, or building the leaf as a properly braced frame rather than a heavier one — a deeper section and internal bracing beat simply adding steel. Aluminum is worth considering on long spans because the weight saving carries straight through to the hinges, the post and the operator.
Posts, footings and retaining walls
Hillside lots mean retaining walls, and retaining walls raise a question we ask on nearly every Coquitlam job: what is the post actually going into?
Fixing a gate post to the top of a retaining wall, or into fill behind one, is not the same as setting it in undisturbed ground. A driveway gate is a long lever and it works its post constantly. We look at the existing concrete, wall or pier before deciding whether it can carry the gate or whether a new footing is needed — and where the answer depends on the wall’s own design, we will say so rather than assume.
Weather and finish
The Tri-Cities catch a lot of rain, and the higher ground gets snow and freeze-thaw that the rest of the region largely misses. Both matter for a gate.
Freeze-thaw is hard on footings and on any detail where water collects, so drainage and sealed sections matter as much as the coating. We build in steel, aluminum and stainless, and finish with hot-dip galvanizing, powder coat or a paint system chosen for the exposure rather than by default.
Automation
On a long or steep driveway an operator is usually the point of the exercise, and it has to be planned before the gate is built. The operator changes hinge loading, bracing and where conduit runs, and on a slope it also affects how the gate is supported through its travel.
We build the gate, posts and hardware to suit the operator and coordinate with your automation and electrical trades. We fabricate and install the metalwork; the operator is supplied and commissioned by the automation specialist.
Permits, bylaws and approvals
Whether a permit is needed, and what height and setback rules apply, depends on the property, the zoning and the scope of the work. In Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody those requirements come from each municipality as the authority having jurisdiction, and they are not identical across the three.
We raise this early rather than after fabrication, and where something needs confirming we will point you at the right department or recommend a professional review instead of guessing on your behalf.
