Circular Steel Ceiling Feature with Concealed Lighting

Project Overview

A large circular ceiling feature built in steel: a rolled outer ring carrying a decorative face of interlocking circles, with the light source concealed inside the frame so the pattern reads as a lit screen rather than as a fixture.

It was built flat in the shop, lifted into a circular opening cut in the ceiling, and finished from the floor below.

What We Built

• A rolled steel outer ring, set up and checked flat on the shop floor before anything was welded to it
• Radial and cross bracing inside the ring to hold it round and stop it going oval under its own weight
• A decorative face of interlocking cut circles, laid out so no two rings meet in a way that leaves a weak spot
• An internal frame that carries the lighting tubes and keeps them off the face
• A dark bronze tone finish over the visible steel

Why It Was Built This Way

A ring this size does not stay round on its own. Rolled steel wants to relax, and a circle that is out by even a small amount is obvious the moment it sits in a round ceiling opening. The bracing inside it is there to hold the shape, first through welding and finishing, then through the lift.

The pattern was kept as a continuous web rather than separate rings joined at points. Every circle overlaps its neighbours, so load has more than one path through the face and there is no single joint carrying a section of the panel.

Keeping the tubes behind the face and off it matters more than it looks. Light grazing the back of the pattern gives the cut edges depth; light sitting on the face flattens the whole thing out.
